Tides matter

The beach break changes a lot with the tide. Lesson providers schedule around it, so be flexible with your start time.

Board and gear

Beginners use long, soft-top boards. A rash guard saves your stomach and shoulders from sun and wax.

Rip currents

If you are pulled out, do not fight it. Paddle parallel to the shore until you are free, then come in at an angle. Your instructor will point out rips before you paddle.
